On Friday, March 11, 2011, a massive 8.9 earthquake devastated Japan at 2:46 local time. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since record-keeping began in the 1800s, and caused a massive tsunami to soon follow, slamming into the northeast. The disaster washed away roads, cars, homes, and other buildings. As of this post, 741 people are reported missing, 948 injured, and at least 400 killed. These numbers, sadly, may rise.
There are many different ways to help with relief efforts. Here's just a few:
Salvation Army.
- Donate online at donate.salvationarmyusa.org
- Call 1-800-SAL-ARMY
- Text the words “Japan” or “Quake” to 80888 to make a $10 donation. (Please ensure that you respond “YES” to the Thank You message you receive.)
American Red Cross.
- Go to www.redcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami.
- Text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Pray.
